How to Get Started with Toucan Collect

For Charities

  1. Sign Up

    • If you're a new Toucan Giving customer click here
    • If you're an existing Toucan Giving customer click here

    Note: Only one authorised representative from your organisation needs to register.

  2. Complete Onboarding

    • Fill out the simple onboarding form with your charity details.
    • Please have your Stripe login details to hand as you will need this to connect your Stripe account.
    • Once you're all set up, you can log into your account anytime to add the second integration if you'd like.
  3. Access Your Dashboard

    After onboarding, you'll gain access to Toucan Collect, where you can:

    • Create custom campaigns with a unique QR code.
    • Share them with your community of fundraisers and volunteers.

    Note: They will need to have the Toucan Collect App on their smartphone.

For Fundraisers

Please note that registration on the Toucan Collect app is specifically for a fundraising account. If you are the authorised individual signing up your charity for Toucan Collect, you must complete the registration process via our website.

    • Download the Toucan Collect app from the iOS or Android app store.

    • Register for a fundraiser account within the app.
  3. Scan the QR Code

    • Ask your charity for the unique QR code for their active campaign.
    • Use the app to scan the code and link your device to the campaign.

    • Once activated, you can immediately start collecting donations for the charity!

What's the difference between tap on phone, tap to pay and tap to donate?

Tap on phone, tap to pay and tap to donate may sound similar and they are, but with subtle differences relating to contactless payments.

Tap on phone allows businesses to accept payments using a smartphone as a card reader. This removes the need for additional hardware, allowing Toucan Collect to process transactions securely using NFC technology. It's especially useful for small businesses and charities looking for a cost-effective way to accept card payments without the cost and hassle of a traditional terminal.

Tap to pay, on the other hand, often refers to contactless payments where customers use their bank card, smartphone or smartwatch to make a purchase by tapping it against a payment terminal. This method is widely used in retail stores, cafes and public transport as it speeds up transactions by eliminating the need for PIN entry for smaller payments.

Tap to donate is designed specifically for charities and fundraising campaigns, allowing donors to give quickly and easily using contactless technology. Donation points are set up at events or in public spaces where supporters can tap their contactless card or mobile device to contribute an amount set by the charity.

While all three methods use the same tap technology, the key difference is their function, i.e. accepting donation payments, making purchases or facilitating donations.

What is tap to pay?

Tap to pay is a fast, secure contactless payment method that allows people to pay by tapping their contactless bank card, smartphone or smartwatch on a payment device. This technology uses Near Field Communication (NFC) between the payment device and the terminal, allowing almost instant transactions.

Tap to pay is used in shops, transport, cafes and other leisure businesses where speed and convenience are really important. Unlike chip and PIN or cash payments, tap to pay transactions are quicker, reducing queues and getting people in and out of the door! For low value payments, a PIN isn't needed, making it very efficient.

Security is a key feature of tap to pay, as each transaction generates a unique code that cannot be reused, helping to prevent against fraud. Mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay offer extra layers of security, such as fingerprint or Face ID. As we move towards contactless payments, tap to pay is becoming the accepted and preferred choice for run of the mill, everyday purchases.

Tap to donate is a contactless donation method that allows people to give quickly and securely by tapping their bank card, smartphone or smartwatch on a donation point. This technology is designed to make charitable giving convenient and eliminates the need for cash while simplifying the donation process.

Tap to donate devices can be set up in various locations, such as events, shops, museums or public spaces, making it easy for people to support a cause in seconds. Unlike traditional donation boxes that work for spare change, tap to donate means charities can receive contributions using preferred cashless payments.

Each transaction is processed securely using NFC, which is the same system used in tap to pay, so that donations are safe and protected. Charities can also set fixed donation amounts or use multiple giving options to encourage people to give more.
